Birthstones

{a little bit about birthday bling...}

BIRTHSTONE: (n) a gemstone that correlates to a specific month of the year.  There are twelve unique gemstones, one for each month.

As far back as I can remember, I have loved birthstones and have worn mine--blue topaz--proudly my whole life.  Call me old fashioned, but I still think that there is something so special about the tradition, and I especially love giving people jewelry made from their birthstone.  I was given a blue topaz ring when I was just a wee thing (Clearly, I've had a love of the sparkly stuff since the very beginning...).  I wore it until my chunky little baby fingers could no longer squeeze into that poor ring, and I still wear it everyday on a chain around my neck (shown below).

The origin of birthstones is believed to date all the way back to the breastplate of Aaron which contained twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel.  There are numerous legends and myths about the healing or therapeutic powers of birthstones and according to these legends, wearing a gemstone during its corresponding month will heighten its healing powers.

Who knows if any of the above is true, but it's a fun story nevertheless!  Below, I have composed a chart of the traditional birthstones...

{may it inspire you the next time you are looking for a special gift}

And here are a few occasions that are perfect for giving a birthstone gift:

  • Milestones...Sweet Sixteen, Bat Mitzvahs, Graduation, Anniversaries
  • Bridesmaids...Use each attendant's birthstone in the same piece of jewelry for a cohesive look with a personal twist.
  • New Moms...Adding the newest addition's birthstone to a piece of jewelry is great way to commemorate becoming a mom and it can also grow into a tradition as the family grows.
  • Grandmothers...A necklace or bracelet with each family member's birthstone is not only beautiful but will become a special family heirloom.
  • Traditional Holidays...Valentine's Day, Christmas, Hanukkah

So tell me, lady birds, do you wear your birthstone?  How do you feel about the tradition??   I want to know what you think...old school or a total classic?? Please weigh in!
