{Character Building Books: books that inspire and illustrate good values, strong character and self worth within their story lines}
This week I am honored to have my very own little sis, child life specialist and child care expert, Blakely Durham write a special edition of City Babies. Books can be great conversation starters, inspiration and positive examples for children. Lucky for us, Blakely has done a lot of field work in this area, so today she is sharing her list of character building books for little ones.
Take a look for a little literary inspiration...with the holidays around the corner, these books would make great gifts!
Enjoy!

Character Building Books For Children
by Blakey Durham, www.craftstocure.com
Parenting and educating young children has taken on a new precedence these days. It has finally become common knowledge that a child’s foundation for learning is set in the early years of life. Countless sources of research prove that an early onset promotion of developmentally-appropriate learning experiences set the stage for a child’s ability to adapt and adhere to future social, academic and creative endeavors.
One of the greatest things a parent or early educator can do for children is to promote an interest in literacy.
Children’s books are one of the greatest ways to connect with a child. The relatable characters and situations provided on the colorfully decorated pages are outlets for communication between caregivers and children. Because there are endless topics and titles when it comes to children’s literature, it is often nice to have a little inspiration for bed time or story time...
As an educator, childcare provider, and pediatric health care professional, I have had the privilege of using children’s literature to help aid in the youthful understanding of a vast amount of topics. No one topic seems to have a greater importance over another. However, I can say that there is one common theme that I find to be important in all of the areas of childcare, and that is the promotion of a healthy sense of character.
Providing children with the resources they need to develop a sense of self-worth, compassion, honesty, and individuality will help them as they discover whatever their future may hold.
Every child is unique and they all learn and develop at their own pace, but if we as educators and/or parents focus on ways to encourage children with individualized ideas to build character, then maybe one day we will all live in a world that radiates from altruistic acts of bravery and kindness.
