It is hard to believe that just a few short weeks ago my little baby boy turned three. He--who stole my heart and changed my life in an instant with his head full of dark hair and even darker eyes--is a kid now. Not a baby but a crazy kid with too much energy and waaaay too many opinions for someone who is only three feet tall.
Over the summer there was a moment when I caught a glimpse of him out of the corner of my eye...in that second I didn't even recognize this creature who was laughing, running and jumping about the playground with the other children. I literally did a double take when I realized that I was looking at my baby. Except he's not a baby anymore. He is not the fatty-pants six month old that I carried through every major airport in America (the reason I have spent the past two years as a devotee to Pilates in an effort to fix my broken back!)...the baby who nearly ate us out of house and home and scored off the weight charts until he was 18 months old. He is now a big boy...a funny, lovable, smart little terror with a bright smile, a big laugh, and an even bigger master plan.
A true joy...a major troublemaker...the best gift I have ever been given.
------------------------------
For his first and second birthdays, we had big Southern parties with huge cakes and enough food to feed an army. This year we decided to keep it simple and have a small gathering at home in New York City with a little cake, some candles and a few balloons to celebrate our big boy on his big day. Well, it took about thirty seconds for a little cake to turn into a big red velvet cake (a family favorite) from Dean and Deluca and four dozen cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcake; for some candles to become a sparkling cake topper and giant candles; and for a few balloons to mean that we still have mylar balloons in every corner of our house. (Seriously, how long do those things last??!) What can I say??? I like to throw a party!!!
Well, it doesn't matter if I did go ever so slightly bigger than necessary for just a little cake and candles because we all had a great time and we will cherish the memory of our little shindig for years to come.
Below, a look at a few of our favorite moments from our big boy's big day...
The birthday boy with his ladies...or "yadies" as he likes to say
{somehow all of our friends have daughters!}
Instant Entertainment:
We covered an air mattress and loaded it with pillows and blankets and let the kids bounce their hearts out. It was without a doubt, the crowd favorite...
A few of the balloons that will not go away and some of the yummiest cupcakes you will ever put in your mouth...
And a happy little family...
I need to give a very big shout out and HUGE thank you to Elizabeth Pettey Photography for documenting our fun in the most beautiful way. Please visit Elizabeth's website for more!
